How we read FMCSA data
Every fact on a carrier record comes from a public FMCSA dataset on data.transportation.gov. This page shows when FMCSA last published each one and when we checked.
| Dataset | What we take from it | FMCSA last published |
|---|---|---|
| Company Census File | Name, USDOT status, fleet size, contact details, registration dates | 2026-10-27 10:51 UTC |
| Motus Carrier - All With History | Operating authority status, insurance and bond on file vs required | 2026-10-27 10:05 UTC |
| Motus AuthHist - All With History | Authority grants, suspensions, reinstatements, revocations | 2026-10-27 10:05 UTC |
| Motus Insur - All With History | Insurance and bonds on file now: insurer, policy, coverage, effective date | 2026-10-27 10:05 UTC |

When we read
- Publish times: once an hour our scheduled job asks the data portal when each dataset above was last published: 7 small requests an hour. Opening a page adds none of these.
- Watched carriers: each run of the scheduled job re-reads a few watched carriers whose last read is older than FMCSA's latest publish, oldest first, and records any change.
- Opening a carrier record: if our stored copy is more than 30 minutes old, we read that carrier's rows from every dataset again; otherwise you see the stored copy. Search engine crawlers are shown the stored copy. Each record shows the time its rows were read, per dataset, under "Check it yourself".
- Roadside inspections and crashes: read from FMCSA's Vehicle Inspection File and Crash File when a person opens a carrier record.
FMCSA's older licensing dataset (Carrier - All With History (legacy, frozen 2026-05-14)) stopped updating; we use it only for companies not yet in the newer Motus files, and the record says so when it does.
