How we check a carrier

  • Straight from FMCSA. We read the carrier's census, authority, insurance, BOC-3 and suspension files on data.transportation.gov.
  • Updated daily. Carriers you watch are re-read each day, and you hear about a change the day FMCSA posts it.
  • Check it yourself. Each flag names the FMCSA dataset and field it came from, with a link to it.

What it watches

  • Suspension notices before they bite

FMCSA serves notice weeks before an authority is suspended, usually because insurance lapsed. The snapshot still says "Active" until the day it happens. We show the notice and the date it takes effect.

  • Phone and email swaps

Load thieves take over a real carrier by changing the contact details on its FMCSA record, then book freight as that company. We log changes to a watched carrier's phone, email and address, and flag them for 30 days. How contact-change alerts work.

  • Insurance and bonds

Liability insurance below the federal minimum, cancellations filed by the insurer, brokers with no $75,000 bond on file. Checked daily.

  • A dated record for each load

One click saves what FMCSA showed about a carrier when you booked: authority, insurance, notices and contact history, with a permanent link you can print or file with the load. Free with an account.

By email or a private RSS feed on every plan; Slack, Microsoft Teams and any webhook on Pro and Team. You choose urgent only, urgent and important, or everything. New to this? Read how to spot a hijacked MC number before you book a load.

Hauling for brokers? Watch them too

  • Brokers you're owed money by

A broker's $75,000 bond is what carriers claim against when it doesn't pay. We list brokers with a bond cancellation filed daily, name the surety, and alert you the day a broker on your list has one. How bond claims work

  • Your own authority

FMCSA's new Motus system has wrongly marked some carriers inactive in 2026. Watch your own USDOT number and hear the day your status, BOC-3 or insurance filing changes. Check yours

For your TMS and AI assistants

Pro and Team include a JSON API (GET /api/v1/carriers/<USDOT>) and webhooks for your TMS. AI assistants such as Claude can use Carrier Ledger through its free, read-only MCP server at https://carrierledger.steellantern.com/mcp (look up a carrier, check a list, read recent suspension notices; no contact details). It is listed in the official MCP Registry.

How we read FMCSA

Sources, the alert sample and other ways to get alerts
  • Board dates and wording come from four FMCSA files on data.transportation.gov: Authority History, Insurance, Insurance History and Revocation, copied Oct 8, 2026.
  • Sep 22 is when the new filing was posted. The Insurance file row reads: form BMC-91X, max_cov_amount 750000.00, effective_date 20260824, trans_date 20260922.
  • Alert timing: Carrier Ledger alerts the day FMCSA's data shows a change, which can be days after the dated event.
  • The alert sample is the email text Carrier Ledger's alert code produces for the Sep 30 notice in this record. It is generated from the record, not copied from a received email.
  • The video was recorded on a test copy running this site's code with email switched on, loaded with this record; the "read" time on screen is when the copy loaded it. It stops before sign-up.
  • Other ways to get alerts: every plan also gets a private RSS feed. Pro and Team can send to any webhook and read carriers through a JSON API for a TMS.
  • Older file: a few carriers are not yet in FMCSA's daily licensing file, so their authority facts come from an older file FMCSA froze on May 14, 2026, and their page says so.
